"Pochteca" is a well-appointed and capable cutter rigged 1995 Caliber 35 LRC that has cruised the Sea of Cortez for the past 18 seasons and been meticuously cared for and maintained throughout. As a solid coastal cruiser, one can't help but appreciate her seaworthiness, responsiveness to the helm in rough water and high winds, personal accommodations, and ease in keeping her shipshape.
The Caliber has every comfort and efficiency in mind when it comes to accommodation. At 35 ft, she is still able to sleep 6 persons thanks to a V-Berth cabin, quarterberth, and dining settee that drops down into another sleeping area. The galley is immediately to port as you enter the salon, with gimballed stove, in-counter fridge/freezer, and deep double sink. To stbd is a functional navigation station that sits adjacent to the comfortable quarterberth, allowing easy access in response to whomever is below deck. The main salon features a supremely comfortable two-settee dinette area with ample seating room, shelving, and storage. Forward is an enclosed V-Berth cabin and head, all in pristine condition.
This vessel is a fine example of Caliber Yacht's attention to building a safe, strong, and seaworthy ship. Not only does she turn heads at the dock, but her long shoal fin keel and robust, skeg-protected rudder translates into genuine open sea safety and performance. An in-mast furling main, self tacking staysail on a retractable baby stay, and furling genoa provide just the right sail plan for local wind conditions. A well designed 12V electrical system, solar panels and large battery capacity translate to days that can be spent in quiet anchorages without runing the engine. Ample water and fuel storage will take you easily across to Baja, the Midriff Islands or down to La Paz and back with some to spare. Safety gear, a stern boarding swim platform, redundant anchors on a robust bowsprit, and an electric windlass all contribute to your crew's confidence and cruising comfort.

Pochteca's Yanmar diesel powers her comfortably at a cruising speed of 5.6 knots with a range under power of more than 500nm without the need to carry extra jerry cans on deck.
Broad, easily navigable companion way steps descend from the cockpit into a roomy main salon that's bright and modern with just the right mix of warm teak cabinetry, a teak and holly cabin sole, and blue upholstered settees. Ample storage is found everywhere - beneath and behind the settees, on wide shelves with high fiddles that keep books in place even in a seaway, and in covered shelves above them. A bulkhead mounted table folds down and opens up to accommodate 1 to 4 guests in less than a minute. The U-shaped galley is just to port. It has a spotless stove and oven, a deep refrigerator/freezer, a double sink with a Grohe faucet, four drawers, huge dish cubbies, and even more storage. Off to starboard, you'll appreciate the well designed nav station with swing out seat and master control panel. Immediately adjacent is the entrance to the quarterberth cabin which can be closed off for privacy of guests. Sturdy teak grab rails on the overhead are right where they're most needed. The engine can be checked via a flip up top step on the companion way stairs. The latter can be moved completely out of the way to provide reasonable access to the engine compartment.
Above the salon and galley are traditional LED lights and a very bright fluorescent fixture. Salon corners have directional lights for reading. Caliber does it right when it comes to ventilation for subtropical cruising weather. Two large dorades, 5 overhead Lewmar hatches, and a total of 11 portlights bring welcome breezes into the boat when dockside or at anchor - all are equipped with screens, the portlights even have Zarcor Clozures for privacy. A lift up panel directly aft of the mast provides access to the bilge where a Water Witch water level sensor and a sump for the ice box and shower are located. A robust automatic bilge pump with manual override switch is located under the sink in the head. To port of the mast is a hanging locker and just beyond is access to the head.
Pochteca's U-shaped galley is efficient and functional, with gimballed stove and a sturdy grab rail. There are 4 teak drawers for utensils and miscellany, shelves with sliding doors, and compartment storage for tableware, pots, food items, & cleaning supplies. Bright and airy during the day, excellent lighting at night. There's an overhead hatch and portlight at eye level for ventilation. A large capacity refrigerator/freezer is efficient and easily accessible. The cooking stove fuel is sourced from an aluminum propane tank, and solenoid shutoff is stored in dedicated aft locker in cockpit that is vented overboard.
Fresh water tanks are reinforced polyester (GRP), located under the quarter berth, pressurized and delivered to the galley and head with manifold and plumbing in the cockpit lazarette. Tank levels are monitored by a calibrated Hart Tank Tender system.
Emergency position reporting is provided by a bulkhead mounted ACR EPIRB and Digital Selective Calling on the VHF radio. Depth, water temperature, and speed (paddle wheel not presently in water) displayed at helm. A Raymarine below decks autopilot, connected directly to the rudder post and interfaced with a Garmin GPS 76C, is a competent and reliable extra set of hands for long passages or single-handed trips. Along with an emergency tiller, it serves as a backup in case of steering cable failure. Garmin is interfaced with RayMarine Autopilot for route following and display of boat speed, position, waypoints, route following. Route planning and underway navigation is performed using the Garmin GPS and/or OpenCPN software on a computer (not supplied) at the Nav station or a roving tablet in the cockpit and an extensive collection of Sea of Cortez waypoints and charts derived from Google Earth imagery. Comprehensive set of waypoints loaded and mostly cross referenced with identical names in Sea of Cortez - A Cruiser's Guidebook by Breeding and Bansmer, Blue Latitude Press.
An upgraded, 12V electrical system requires no crew intervention to keep house and start batteries charged at all times. A Blue Seas panel keeps the two circuits separate, but enables them to be combined if needed. A Xantrex Echo Charger feeds current to the 12V AGM starting bank when the charging voltage to the house AGMs is above a certain threshold. Solar panels mounted above the bimini provide a rated output of 320 watts, ample current to run boat systems and keep the batteries charged for days without running the engine. Main solar panels are removed and stored below decks during 7 month summer layup. A small Sunsei panel on stern pulpit and separate controller in engine compartment keeps batteries fully charged during that time. Previous house and start batteries were still fully operational for 11 years.
The fuel management panel in the port lazertte enables underway selection of fuel filters.
Pochteca's Yanmar diesel powers her comfortably at a cruising speed of 5.6 knots with a range under power of more than 500nm without the need to carry extra jerry cans on deck. An engine survey done during the 2005 purchase from the original owner put the estimated running time on the Yanmar at 600 hours. An hour meter installed at that time presently reads 1350 hours putting the total at less than 2000 hrs. The cutlass bearing was replaed in 2016.
Salon settee, quarterberth, and V-Berth blue velour cushions are original. Still pristine in appearance with the exception of a hidden repair under one settee cushion. Quarterberth and double berth dinnette cushions are included but might not appear in all pictures. Seat cushions in cockpit (very good condition) are mesh covered high density foam (Bottomside?) that don't absorb water. Genoa cover, dodger, bimini, helm and winch covers are matching burgundy color. A ventilated, mesh cover over boat while in storage during the warmer months provides very good protection.
Under full main and genoa, Pochteca easily makes 6+ knots with speeds exceeding 7 under ideal conditions. With the retractable forestay nothing gets in the way of the genoa while tacking. And, when the wind picks up and sea conditions become more challenging, matching sail power and boat trim is straight forward with in-mast furling and a self-tacking staysail. All control lines are led to the cockpit.
Pochteca is fully equipped with an EPIRB, inflatable life vests, safety harnesses, Lifesling, throwable horseshoe buoy, and cushions. A floating "ditch" bag contains signalling devices, an extra electric flare, smoke flares, limited water & food supplies, and more should it be necessary to abandon ship.
A double-leaf table and matching cup holder are folded against the pedestal cockpit, yet ready for instant use while underway or at anchor. A custom, bow to stern, 3-piece cover made with Coolaroo shade cloth material has been used during summer layup on the hard for the past 8 years. The present cover is new 2023. It tents over a line from bow to mast and over the boom and is attached with zip ties to the toerail. A zipper provides access to the cockpit area from the stern.
The backup fuel tank under the salon floor was decomissioned in 2005 after the current owners purchased the boat. It is presently not serviceable.
